I’m (Debb) part of a group called, 100 Women Who Care Clark County. The goal of the organization is to make a difference by coming together to support the health and growth of our community. We meet quarterly ( once every 90 days) for an hour to hear presentations from three randomly chosen non-profits benefiting the community.  We listen to short heart-felt speeches and then take a vote. Once the non-profit is identified, each of the members donates $100.00, for a total of $10,000.

This month, 100 Women Who Care voted to donate our money to Villages Clark County– a plan not a place – independent living with a community of support. This great non-profit relies on like-minded volunteers who help older seniors age comfortably, and safely, in their own homes. Carefully vetted volunteers do everything from changing a light bulb on a ceiling fixture; to driving, grocery shopping, yard work, spring cleaning, home repairs, and companionship.  

While the name 100 Women implies there are just 100 members, the group can grow and grow. It’s our hope more women will join in our efforts. Imagine the donation power of 1000 Women Who Care. In my opinion, four hours a year and four-hundred dollars x 100 Women ( or more ) is a powerful way to make a positive impact on our community.

We hear a lot of jokes about how much it rains here, and in the Pacific Northwest in general.  However, you might be surprised to see weather statistics for the United States. Florida, Louisiana,  Mississippi, and Alabama are actually the wettest states in the country.  Washington state ranks at number thirty, with about 38.5 inches of rainfall a year. In Clark County, Washington, depending upon where one lives, we get about 40-50 inches of rain each year. The national average is 39 inches a year.

 

 

However, the rain we do get tends to fall over a longer period of time – and we do get some gloomy gray periods from time-to-time. Over all though, we actually appreciate the climate. After all, our annual rain gives us our lush green landscapes – and in the spring and summer months, an abundance of flowers and blossoms.

 

And, all the rain gives us an abundance of pristine water ways which support our region’s wildlife – and gives us plenty of opportunities for recreation and outdoor fun.

And, with the right gear, and the right attitude – what’s a little rain?

Camas First Friday 

Align with nature…Magic happens.      ~ John Friend

The magic of gnomes and fairies has always been celebrated at our household. The grandchildren, who call me Oma, substitute it for Gn-oma at times, because they know how much I love these mythical nature spirits. 

Therefore, we are especially excited about the Camas First Friday event next month. The Garden Gnome and Fairy Gala on May 4, is in honor of the Camas Plant and Garden Fair which follows in the next week.

 


If you too appreciate Nature, no doubt you know gnomes are often considered the protector of the forest and healers of animals. According to some legends, the fairies work in concert with the gnomes to carry out this large responsibility. 

We think it should be a fun evening in downtown Camas with gnomes and fairies  making a rare appearance throughout in shops and businesses. There’s also a treasure hunt for hidden fairy houses, an enchanted fairy garden cake decorating contest, and fairy and gnome crafts for kids. 


Naturally the businesses will be open late as usual, from 5-8PM, and the local eateries will be eager to serve hungry families. Don’t forget too, you earn tickets to win great prizes for each location you visit.

We are both fans of The Reserve at Ashley Ridge in Felida. Felida is known for its natural open spaces, luxurious neighborhoods, ViewHomes™, desirable schools, and access to recreation. It’s only about a twenty minute commute to both Portland International Airport and downtown Portland.

It’s another rainy week, but I had the pleasure of meeting a client for coffee yesterday morning in downtown Washougal. The Washougal Coffee Company is generally quiet enough to allow for good conversation and the London Fogs are delicious.  In my opinion, this beverage is made for cold damp days in the Pacific Northwest.

 

A London Fog is also known as Vanilla Tea Misto or an Earl Grey Tea Latte. In Scotland, it’s called a Vancouver Fog, since it was originally created in Vancouver, British Columbia.  Basically, it’s steeped Earl Grey tea with steamed milk, a shot of vanilla, and a sweetener of choice. I also sprinkle the top layer of foam with nutmeg and cinnamon.

If you  haven’t had the pleasure of enjoying this creamy beverage, I encourage you to give it a try. Some people use a hint lavender in the recipe too, although, most often, I prefer to drink the classic. Just thinking about it makes me want to go back to the Washougal Coffee Company and order another.

According to the Earth Day Network, currently about 300 million tons of plastic are produced each year to make bags, bottles, packages, and other commodities for people all over the world. Unfortunately, only about ten percent of this plastic is properly recycled and reused. The rest ends up as waste in landfills or as litter in our natural environment, where it leaches dangerous chemicals into the nearby soil and water, endangering humans and wildlife alike.

 

Of the 33 million tons of plastic waste generated in the U.S. each year,  only about 7 percent is recycled. This plastic waste ends up in landfills, beaches, rivers and oceans and contributes to such devastating problems as the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch, a floating mass of garbage the size of a continent where plastic outnumbers plankton. Plus, most plastic is made from oil.

It’s no surprise to learn the theme for this years, May 22, 2018 Earth Day celebration is End Plastic Pollution.

I first fell in love with Forget-me-nots while growing up in Alaska. The wild native alpine forget-me-not grows well throughout the rugged state in open, rocky places along mountain trails.   Other varieties also grow freely along the banks of marshy areas, creeks, and lakes. In 1917, it was named the Alaska state flower.

 

There are both native and non-native forget-me-nots in the Pacific Northwest, although, they all likely escaped domestic gardens and took root in optimal habitat. The scientific name for forget-me-nots, Myosotis, means mouse ears. We think the name aptly describes the shape and size of the soft petals.

Wherever we live, I always make sure we have a few clumps of forget-me-nots in our gardens. At our rural home in Camas, the dainty little blooms have just opened. They remind me of clear blue sky with a yellow dot of sun in the center.  I generally plant them with red azaleas as the colors contrast beautifully. In another week or so, it’s going to be beautiful.

Spring has been a big tease in Clark County, Washington this year. Yesterday, we were pleasantly surprised by afternoon sunshine and temps in the upper 60’s. It was glorious. Today, we have heavy rain and a wind warning in effect through tomorrow. Yippee.

 

However, we are celebrating spring with every new bloom that opens at our rural home in Camas. Last week, we were thrilled to see our favorite woodland flowers, the Trilliums beginning to bloom. This week, it’s the lovely heart-shaped dainty blooms of Bleeding Hearts.

 

They look wonderful in naturalized gardens and require moist soil with sun-dappled shade.  If in the right spot, they can easily take over a garden, so feel free to share new plants with fellow gardeners.  Or, consider donating healthy plants to local plant sales where proceeds go for a good cause.

 

Deer will bypass this woodland plant too – a big plus when you live in rural settings. Butterflies and hummingbirds like them though – another big plus! Gardening with natives, or plants that thrive in a particular climate, is one of the best ways to work in harmony with nature.

 

 

Native plants are not only adapted to environmental conditions, they are naturally resistant to pests and diseases. Therefore, they require less maintenance and have additional storm-water and wildlife advantages. While this particular Bleeding Heart is not a true native ( Western Bleeding Heart), it is well-suited to our local conditions and thrives.

One of our favorite woodland flowers is the Trillium. This Northwest native belongs to the Liliaceae (lily) family. And while they are relatively easy to grow from their rhizomatous root, they are very slow to develop and spread. The upside – the plants can live for up to 25 years!

We spotted them yesterday afternoon while getting some exercise on the Lacamas Heritage Trail in Camas. Nothing screams Spring like spotting these beautiful white flowers popping up between the rocks and moss.  The name trillium comes from the Latin word for three – they have three leaves, three sepals, and three petals.

We have them growing in the forested area of our acreage in the hills above Camas. Due to the higher elevation our trilliums are still in the bud stage.

As they age, the flowers fade from white to pink to purple.

Wherever your travels take you today, we wish you the unexpected surprise of early Spring wildflowers. What a joy it is to celebrate Nature.

However, it isn’t necessarily the best fit for everyone. Here are some considerations to see if you’d be a good match. 

Commute Times: If you’re required to travel to a job, the commute time is worth thinking about prior to make the move. We often tell our prospective buyers to drive the route a few times. Driving fifteen miles in the country is slower than driving fifteen miles on a major thoroughfare. The upside, the roads are often scenic and enjoyable. 

Shops and Services: If you like being close to everything, a rural home might not be the best fit. It’s not likely you’ll be able to run to the store for a quick gallon of milk, or pop-out for a quick pizza and beer at the corner pub. The upside, you learn to plan ahead – and when you do have an evening out for pizza – it’s a true treat. 

Utilities:

Storms often create power outages, therefore homes in rural areas often have back-up generators, or at the very least, an alternative heat source such as a wood stove. It’s one thing to go without electricity for a few hours or days, but quite another to go without heat.

Internet and cell service isn’t always guaranteed either. If TV is a big deal for you, or internet service for working at home, it’s important to investigate the reliability of service prior to buying.

Many homes in the country have wells and septic systems. It’s important to due diligence on the condition of both when you’re looking at a property to buy. Once it’s yours – it’s important to follow the required maintenance and testing schedules. 

The upside – you have a lot more control over your life and living independently and sustainably.

Wide Open Spaces:

If you’re the one who loves to host progressive dinners or block parties, a lack of close proximity to neighbors could be a problem. Will you be happy living twenty to thirty minutes ( or more ) away from the nearest mall, restaurant, movie theater or sports field?

The upside – a sense of community. The people you do meet will be a great network for support and advice regarding the lifestyle.

Neighbors and Freedoms:

Naturally, with land comes some freedoms. There is no HOA in the country telling you where you can park your boat, or RV, or put up a trampoline. However, the same goes for your neighbors. Mutual respect for one another and the enjoyment of soothing views and landscapes should be the goal for all. Realistically, there are some situations where the neighbor may not share the same values. It’s best to scope things out before you make your move. 

Or, your potential neighbors may be far enough away that you won’t be bothered; that also means they might not be available in a true emergency or even when you need a cup of sugar.

The upside – most neighbors in the country know one another’s phone numbers and try to help each other when we can. For example, last year, our neighbor tilled our garden area with his tractor after watching my husband and I struggle with shovels for an hour.

Nature As Neighbors:

Living in the country means paying a great deal of respect to plants, wildlife and your fellow man. Depending on where you’re planning to move, be prepared to share your land—and sometimes the road— with a number of critters such as raccoons and deer, and a myriad of other creatures such as frogs, snakes, and birds.

The upside – We believe organic gardening, a sustainable lifestyle, respect for wildlife and each other – and the planet in general,  is good for all of us, regardless of where we live.

Lately we’ve notice a reversal of the “downsizing trend” by empty nesters several years ago.  So what happened?
