Vancouver is the fourth-largest city in the state. Sited along the north bank of the Columbia River, it is the location of the first permanent settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. Until recently, it was a bedroom community for Portland, OR, just across the river. But it now has many large employers and is developing its own centers of commerce and business.
